Message from the Firm – Looking Ahead
October marks the beginning of fall, leaves are changing, kids are back to school and we look forward to the holiday season. This is also the time of year for many of us when we start budget discussions and development of training and marketing plans for the next year. And, they are likely to be tough discussions. Although the economy continues to show promises of a bright future, it still leaves many struggling today. We hope we can help... READ MORE

Get to Know – Kara Hendren
Kara Hendren joined the SMBH family in June, 2008 as a project engineer.  A 2003 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering, Kara spent two years working in construction management and three years with an A/E firm in Columbus prior to coming to SMBH.

Kara’s responsibilities include working with SMBH’s clients from schematic design through construction documents, preparing drawings and specifications and performing construction administration. She mentions that the aspect she most enjoys about her job is the challenge and variety that each day presents. One challenging project that Kara has had the opportunity to work on is the Scioto Mile Bandshell and Café at Bicentennial Park.  “The work that is undertaken by SMBH and that I, as a project engineer, am exposed to, is both exciting and interesting and I learn something new every day.”

This year has been a very exciting and busy time in Kara’s personal life as her daughter Kyah Mayleigh Hendren was born March 18, 2009. Kara and her husband Jason have spent the last seven months enjoying their new daughter and parenthood.

What Our Clients Are Saying

“We have had the opportunity to work with Shelley Metz Baumann Hawk, Inc. on several projects – most recently the Hocking College Residence Halls and Franklin County Courthouse. In each case, we have always had a great experience working with the SMBH staff. They are constantly in-tune with the architects’ needs and are a very easy group to work with. In fact, we feel as if we are working “with” each other, not “for” each other. On some of our unique projects, the SMBH staff has gone above and beyond in order to make the project work. For example, the Hocking College residence hall was built on top of an abandoned coal mine – not something you see every day! The SMBH team researched and designed a system that worked perfectly for that given situation. We also find that SMBH is constantly evaluating and re-evaluating the project to look for opportunities to save materials, time, and money. We look forward to working together with them again in the future.”

“One of the reasons I choose SMBH is their people. From top to bottom, they are competent and easy to work with. Speed and accuracy are crucial to our business and the people at SMBH deliver both.”
