Message from the Firm

POSITIVE CHANGE
As the saying goes, "the only constant is change." Although constant and inevitable, change is never easy and sometimes comes with a certain amount of fear and resistance. We become content with the old ways of doing things and are comfortable with the same "tried and true" processes in our daily lives.

Strategic, positive change, however, is essential for improving the competitive advantage of an organization and is critical in building for the future.

At SMBH, we have experienced much change in the last year that we know is for the betterment of our business and our customers. With continued emphasis on our core values of RESPONSIVENESS, INNOVATION and RELATIONSHIP, we are confident that our recent changes will not only enhance, but build upon our mission.

At SMBH, we embrace the notion that "change is constant" and we believe that these positive changes will benefit our customers as we move into the future.

Sincerely,
Shelley Metz Baumann Hawk

Get to Know: Jeff McCutchen

A 1991 graduate of The Ohio State University, Jeff McCutchen is one of our newest team members at SMBH. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Jeff is a registered Professional Engineer and LEED AP. At SMBH, his responsibilities involve construction administration and analysis and document/specification preparation from the schematic phase through the construction document phase.

Jeff enjoys visiting job sites during construction as a constant reminder of the importance of design constructability. His favorite part of any project is walking through the building near its completion or immediately after it opens. This gives him a sense of accomplishment and the ability to see first-hand the architect's vision and observe the end user in the space. Jeff recently was involved in the design of the renovation of a historic hotel in Piqua, Ohio into a library/conference center for the city's use. Although the field investigation to find the bones of the structure was a dirty job, it was rewarding to see the reuse and transformation of an old structure into a useful building that will last another 100 years.

Jeff and his wife Debbie recently celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary and stay very busy with their four children – three girls (including 11-year-old twins) and one boy. Jeff's family also have some unusual pets – they are raising 6 chickens and 2 ducks from day-old chicks to full grown layers! "The kids enjoy them as pets and each one has a name," comments Jeff. "Also we like the benefit of free organic eggs!"

Project Spotlight

Diley Ridge Medical Center
Canal Winchester, OH

The new Diley Ridge Medical Center is a joint venture of Mount Carmel Health System and Fairfield Medical Center and is the first free-standing emergency and diagnostic center in central Ohio. Built to fill the void of medical facilities between Lancaster and Columbus, the center serves patients throughout northern Fairfield County, including the communities of Pickerington, Groveport, Canal Winchester, Carroll, Baltimore and Violet Township.

The 36,000-square-foot single-story building is designed for one additional floor and houses a full-service, 24-hour emergency department with a full clinical laboratory, state-of-the-art imaging center and women’s health services. The emergency center also includes a 10-bed unit for patients who require observation and monitoring.

The building structure was designed to accommodate a future floor as well as additions to the south and west. The lobby features a two story high clerestory with an exterior two story high curtain wall. Structural challenges on the project included two free standing canopies. The entry canopy is two stories high supported on four columns and the emergency entry canopy is self supporting on only two columns.

The project has achieved LEED® Gold certification and holds the distinction of being the first heath care facility in the State of Ohio to achieve this designation.
