Message from the Firm

The Social Media Bandwagon
It is likely that at some point in the last year or so, you have engaged in discussions at your firm about the role of social media. We too have had those same discussions as we wanted to ensure that if we engaged in these tools, our participation would be meaningful for our clients and our employees. As such, we have engaged in using a few tools that we believe will help us continue to expand the ways in which we communicate and collaborate.

Our social media journey began with LinkedIn. We realized that for the business-to-business world, LinkedIn is a key outlet for networking, asking and answering questions, and sharing expertise. We invite you to join us in LinkedIn and participate in the discussion. Although you likely have a profile on LinkedIn, so few people actually take advantage of the medium's full potential. We invite you to join us in this online space to share ideas. There are many examples of how members of the design and construction world have used LinkedIn to build business, solve problems and learn from one another.

Most recently, we also entered the world of Twitter. With an estimated 100 million people using this medium, we needed to join the conversation as well! As a professional services firm, we are interested in sharing our firm's expertise and experience and Twitter is a great tool to expand thought leadership by communicating information about our firm, our clients, and our exciting projects. Twitter is also an effective way to share relevant and interesting information about trends impacting the markets we serve. We invite you to follow us on Twitter and we look forward to following your company as well!

Finally, you can also find out more about SMBH on Wikipedia.

Sincerely,
Shelley Metz Baumann Hawk

Get to Know: Lara Fling
Lara Fling joined the SMBH team as a design engineer in August, 2010. She is a 2007 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and in May, 2010, Lara received masters degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

As a design/project engineer, Lara works with our project managers to complete the structural engineering aspects on projects. When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Lara commented "What I enjoy most about my job is the problem-solving and figuring out how the structure works. No two projects are exactly alike and there are multiple ways to solve problems, so it keeps the work interesting."

This past summer, Lara worked in Haiti with Engineering Ministries International — a Christian ministry that designs facilities that serve the poor in developing countries. She worked on a project which included a new school and health clinic for the neighborhood of Bon Repos in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. "I am excited to see the project built starting sometime this winter and I hope to make a trip back to Haiti to see it in the future," said Lara.

A native of Naperville, Illinois (a suburb west of Chicago), Lara is an avid dancer and enjoys all kinds, but most recently has taken up salsa dancing. Welcome to our team, Lara!

Project Spotlight
Franklin County Courthouse
Columbus, OH
Franklin County CourthouseLocated in the historic River South District of Columbus, the Franklin County Courthouse will represent the American justice system for the citizens of Franklin County. The 350,000-square-foot facility is located at the northwest corner of High and Mound streets. It replaces the current 1970s-built county courthouse, located across the street. Cognizant of this project being one of the first green-built county courthouses in Ohio, the design team is seeking LEED Gold certification for the project. The complex includes sharp-angled, contemporary designs with seven-stories of glass walls, as well as grand corridors that will offer a spectacular view. Included in the amenities of the structure are 30 common pleas courtrooms, 10 magistrate rooms, a coffee shop, office spaces, and a sunlit waiting room for jurors.

Working with a fast-track construction schedule, the project team encountered some challenges with the availability of materials, which necessitated early delivery of structural drawings to facilitate ordering steel early. The design team also had to coordinate exterior column locations in advance to correspond with the façade of the building. Additionally, the project required collaboration to construct a mechanical penthouse on the roof. The new building was unveiled during a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 16.

This project was recently featured in Environmental Design + Construction magazine. Click here to read the entire article.

We are pleased to announce that our project, the Hocking College Energy Institute, was recently awarded LEED® Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This project is the first LEED Platinum educational building in the state of Ohio. The project received a total of 56 out of 69 points encompassing each category of LEED NC 2.2 and earned more points than any other project in the State of Ohio under the LEED NC rating system!

On February 14, Stephen Metz and Jerry Marselle were featured presenters at the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) — Columbus chapter meeting. They presented our AIA CES program — "Bringing Revit Into Your Life" — which qualifies attendees for 1 AIA learning unit and 1 CSI CEU. For more information about this presentation and our other AIA CES presentation "Design Loads: What Are They and Where Do They Go," contact Stephen Metz at smetz@smbhinc.com.

An article on our project, the New Franklin County Common Pleas Courthouse, was recently featured online in World Interior Design Network. Click here to read the article on one of the most sustainable courthouses in the country.

We are pleased to announce that Anna Milligan, her husband Chuck and their daughter Charlie welcomed a new addition to their family! Calliope (Calli) Jean Milligan was born on November 8 weighing 7 lbs. 13 oz. Congratulations Milligan family!

On February 8, Lisa Connelly participated in a "TweetChat", a pre-arranged chat on Twitter through the use of Twitter updates (called tweets) in a virtual conversation. The program — arranged by the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) — included the topics AEC Perspective: Social Media and Get Organized: Marketing Information. We were excited to be involved as this was the first ever TweetChat for SMPS Columbus.

SMBH was invited to present our AIA registered program, "Bringing Revit Into Your Life" to Columbus City Schools (CCS) on December 21. The presentation was designed to help CCS determine how they can use this technology in the future.

Stephen Metz was among a select group of architects and engineers who were invited to the State Architect's Office (SAO) to discuss the proposed BIM protocol with the State Architect and members of his staff.

In December, the television news program, 60 Minutes, conducted an interview with Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, in the William Oxley Thompson Library on the campus of The Ohio State University. SMBH was the structural engineer for the $64 million main library project which was completed in 2009. Click here to watch the clip of the program.

Bill Lantz and Eric Messerly will be conducting their annual presentation "The Structural Secrets of Knowlton Hall" to Ohio State's architectural class on February 22. To view last year's taped presentation, click here.

Bill Lantz has been asked to speak at the 2011 North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) in May. His presentation "Practical Applications of Steel Plate Shear Walls" will focus on the realities of using this technique on a built project. For more information about the conference, click here.

The enthusiastic and adventurous employees of SMBH never let a good snowfall go to waste. From time to time, we grab our snow pants and make-shift computer box sleds and head out to the hills for some sledding fun. Talk about teamwork!

In support of our Wellness Program, SMBH holds an annual friendly weight loss competition known as "The KL/r Campaign." For non-engineers, KL/r is known as the "slenderness ratio". The initial weigh-in was held before Thanksgiving and the final weigh-in took place after New Year's Day. Congratulations to Dan Yard for winning the grand prize with a weight loss of 3.39%! Dave Hawkins came in a close second with 3.35%. Of the 21 total participants this year, 16 lost or maintained their weight during the holidays. Great job team!

What Our Clients Are Saying

"On a recent project, the construction manager's milestone schedule would not allow for the time required to incorporate mill rollings into the structural steel bid package. SMBH designed around easily accessible warehouse shapes and took into consideration minimizing drops by producing a design based on standardized modules.

Ken Siegfried's thoughtful design saved the owner money, while allowing our team to meet a very tight schedule."
