Galyan's Trading Company
Located across the country, Galyan's Trading Company wanted high quality structural engineering design services for their big box retail stores. SMBH performed the structural engineering services for more than 30 stores during an eight year period. These projects ranged from new one-story stand-alone buildings and two-story mall anchors to renovations of existing buildings. Most of the buildings were steel frame, but one was built using precast concrete. One of the remodeling projects occurred in a large cast-in-place structure. All of the stores featured a very high "barrel vault" roof at the center of the store. In addition, the interiors featured exceptionally large display fixtures constructed of heavy timber, rough hewn logs and structural steel, which required structural design. For the two-story buildings, the floor-to-floor height was typically about 20 feet, but some of the stores had 24 feet as the floor-to-floor height. Combined with the "barrel vault" central roof, these unusually large floor-to-floor heights produced two-story buildings that were the height of typical five-story buildings. The exceptional height presented challenges in the design of the lateral load resisting systems. The buildings also featured large column bays, sometimes as large as 45 feet by 45 feet. This presented the particular design problem of controlling perceptible vibrations of the floor. Making these challenges even more daunting was the aggressive schedule that was presented for each project.
