The Ohio State University (OSU) has embarked upon a new facility to house its office spaces for Student Academic Services. Located in Columbus on Lane Ave., the 125,000-square-foot, six-story building is a steel structure with a brick façade. To ensure the structure is sustainable, the project team is seeking LEED Silver Certification. Several challenges have to be met by the project team to complete the structure. The foundation of the building had to be customized to meet the varying depths of shale on the site. Additionally, the foundation had to be designed in coordination with the wall of a parking structure. Designed as an inverted "V," the west end of the 330-foot long building cantilevers 42 feet. As a solution, the project team is using four pieces of 2-inch, 10-inch deep steel bars to support the cantilevers, achieving the design goal of having very little visible structure supporting the cantilever.
