Capitalizing on 20 years of partnership with the owner and architect on additions and renovations of the Fairfield Medical Center campus, SMBH was retained for completion of the north expansion project. The expansion area was to be utilized as the new main entrance to the facility. The owner wanted a building that would capture the attention of visitors when they arrived, as well as the creation of a welcoming environment. The result was a distinctive space-frame canopy used as a focal point for the entry doors. The helipad, which was originally situated at ground level and adjacent to the emergency room parking, was relocated to the roof where an adjacent elevator now provides immediate access to the emergency room. The loading docks are concealed below the lower level floor structure and provide a secure and covered environment for the off-loading of medical supplies.
